Picking Out Which One Your Child Is

No parent wants their child to be an underachiever but when you have one you feel embarrassed in those parent teacher meetings. There are two categories of underachievers; one is the type who has interest in other tings instead of studies and the other who suffer from depression or any similar thing. Now, both the types are difficult for parents to handle specially with the second type parents get worried and concerned. With the first type parents usually go the harsh way to try and bring their child back on track but it is impossible to do so. It is difficult but not impossible to make sure your child gets good grades in school.

Stress and School

Listen To The Teacher

The first and the basic step is to know which category your child falls in. you can do by this by talking to the teachers who teach him and ask them why doesn’t he bring good grades. If they say because he is too mischievous and talkative that means your child is in the first category. If the teacher says he is dull and inattentive during the class that means he is in the second category. Once you know this you can move onto the other steps explained in this article.

Try To Help

If your child is in the first category then you will difficulty in tackling him. Your child is not bringing good grades because his attention is somewhere else and by forcing him you will do no good. So try and get to know what your child is interested in. for instance your child is not getting good grades in history because he is interested in arts and crafts. In such a situation try and help your child with that particular subject. If he is interested in anything else than studies then you should be a bit strict as well as sensible. Know what your child loves and try to lure him with it. For instance, your child is interest in baseball so a good approach would be to promise him that you will buy him a baseball bat if he gets good grades.

Explain What Can Happen

The second type described earlier is a bit difficult to handle too. Such children need a lot of motivation and inspiration to get back on the track. Usually children face these problems because of family issues or physical issues. If you think your child has a physical issue or a disorder the get him checked by a doctor. However if he doesn’t have any such thing then motivate your child. Tell him that his bringing good grades have nothing to do with anyone else but his own future life. Any motivation would work for such children. Get to know their interests and try to spend more time with them. Get them stuff they love and try to get them involved in activities and sports for them to be more outspoken.

As an educator who has worked with students at ALL LEVELS from pre-school through college, I can honestly say that the most successful students are the ones whose parents are very involved in their education. Paying attention to and talking with your child is the first most vital step. Talking with your child's teachers and supporting their efforts is also of extreme importance. From an educator's perspective, I can say that if more parents took the time to do these two things, our schools would be filled with students who knew they had a great support system and, therefore, would be very motivated to learn.

Great topic. Keep posting these articles!

I really don't think there are any under-achievers. Not everyone can make straight A's. Studies prove that average students who have to fight harder for their grades do better in life than the ones who cruise through. I just think you should encourage children to do their best, and if C's are their best, they should be praised for it.
