Comfort is key, helping your little one sleep through the night

There is no definite age that defines when a baby should be sleeping through the night. In addition, experts do not actually agree what it is to “sleep through the night” for a baby. In some cases babies are born with their sleep and waking cycles nearly opposite of their parent's cycle.

There are some definite answers regarding what is considered to be sleep problems for babies though. These and other factors may help you to determine whether you baby is sleeping in a healthy way for them.

If there are some problems, or if you want to encourage the baby to sleep in a cycle more similar to your own, there are some steps that you can take to encourage that.

There are some problems that you should consult your pediatrician about, and it is a good idea to simply keep them informed about any development.

Among the most common sleeping problems or disorders include a range that are only nuisances to you and some that can be real problems. Some babies may experience sleep apnea and a number of experts contribute SIDS deaths to this.

In addition, other babies may experience wakefulness or sensitivity when asleep. Others may move around in their sleep. Each of these are concerns and they may or may not pose problems.

The most common complaint regarding babies sleeping are that they sleep at different times than their parents and they sleep for shorter periods than the typical night's rest.

It is important to consider that some of what baby is doing they are doing because it is or seems healthy to them. Your desire to change that is not based on anything malicious most of the time, but it may not seem naturally right to them.

As a result you may need to make some attempts to coax them into change. For example create a very quite and calm area for rest. This is especially important if baby is sensitive to sound or is disturbed easily. Prepare their bed with safe bedding. Most modern baby bedding is considered safe, but it is always best to research the baby bedding that you are thinking about purchasing.

Your baby bedding should supply a flat and firm surface. In addition assure that the sleep area is free of choking hazards. This may include decorations on your crib bedding set.

Lastly, be certain the bedding is made of material that your baby likes. If your baby has a preference for a particular color then consider selecting a crib set that is that color. Turn out the lights and close the door.

Be aware of what is going on with baby also. Simply choosing a better baby bedding set will not help much if the baby is teething.

Likewise, if the fabric of your crib bedding is irritating baby giving him (or her) a pacifier or teething ring probably will not help either.

For better or worse it is not that easy though. You will still need to establish patterns. Place the baby in the same place each time it is “time for bed”. Using similar modern baby bedding consistently may also help. It is recommended that you not deprive your baby of needed nutrition in the night, but you should be consistent in your schedule.

Keep your baby crib bedding and sleep area clean as well. In cases of sleep apnea you should inform the pediatrician.
