Making the Move to Middle School

Usually the concept and activities at middle school level differentiates from country to country. In the United States, middle school is more than just schooling. There are various activities a child is involved into such as sports, games, gyms, etc. All these contribute towards the better upbringing of the child physically and mentally both. However, going into such schools is a great change for children and most of them usually feel awkward with the variations they get. Some of them don’t want to indulge into sports but they have to, some of them are too possessive about their belongings and don’t want to keep them into the lockers, etc.

All these feelings are natural and nearly every child has concerns related to them. Of course they get used to it with time but if you are a good parent you should make efforts for your child to be comfortable in such a school environment from day one. There are certain things you can do to make sure your child doesn’t feel awkward about all these things. Here are some tips on how to manage the move of your child from elementary to middle school:

Talk to your child about the differences he will be facing in life so that it’s not a surprise for him. Give him tips and advices on how should he manage the difference and tell him stories about you. Make sure you tell him the inspirational stories to buck him up instead of frightening him. Also, tell him about the positive aspects of such things and how they will help him be more open towards people. Shy kids usually face more problems and it affects their studies as well. If your child is shy then you should be more concerned about him.

Never ever pressurize your child for completing his assignments and stuff. You should be a good parent and check his progress out but make sure you are not pressurizing him. Make it a mark to be always there to help your child whenever he or she wants. If you pressurize him, he will start hiding his failures from you. Be gentle to them and help them out wherever they feel lost. If their progress is not up to the mark so instead of being harsh tackle them gently and try to know the cause of it all.

Also, keep in good touch with the teachers specially the class teacher or home teacher. Keep asking them regularly about your child’s progress but make sure you don’t do this in front of him. If you ask your child’s progress in front of the teacher it would make him embarrassed. Usually in such situations children feel that the parents don’t have faith in them and this causes depression. Make sure whatever you do it doesn’t hurt your child’ self esteem. Once the self esteem is gone your child would be dull and would go on a decline in terms of his progress.
